ITU has blazed a trail with the “joint service implementation protocol regarding the development of an ecological settlement unit standard within the scope of the law on the transformation of areas under disaster risk and the pilot implementation in Kocakır district of Eskişehir Province Odunpazarı district” signed with the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of Turkey. In the study carried out by a large team of experts in İTÜ, design strategies were developed to reduce carbon emissions and to create ecological indoor and outdoor living spaces, including the infrastructure systems of the settlement at all scales; from the material scale to the building and settlement scale, in the reserve area of Eskişehir Kocakır Site. In line with these strategies, Kocakır has been designed with all its details to form the basis for the “national ecological settlement standard infrastructure” as a zero-waste city that makes zero carbon emissions in energy, offers areas with high carbon sink potential, uses the resources in the region, produces its own needs and uses the waste in the region.
